Three Ways Drones Have Changed the Surveying Industry

09.27.2018

DURATION 2 minute read

From package delivery to emergency response, drones are changing the way things get done. The benefits of the technology are also helping reshape the surveying industry. Decreasing project costs and access to otherwise inaccessible areas are just a few of the advantages drones are bringing to the field.

Drones are reshaping the survey industry in three ways, including:

Time:

Drones can gather accurate, high-definition aerial images in a fraction of the time compared to standard methods.

Safety:

The safety of our team is paramount. Dense woods, rushing water and areas with limited accessibility can all be accessed with a drone; limiting the risk of bodily harm.

Cost:

Before drones, an aerial survey would require a flyover via plane or helicopter. These methods are expensive and often cost-prohibitive. Drones, however, are readily accessible at a fraction of the price.

Our in-house survey team frequently uses drones for aerial photogrammetry to take shots for boundary, topographic and as-built surveys, proving valuable insight for our engineers. Whether gathered by drone or total station, the geospatial information our surveyors provide minimizes project complications and maximizes efficiency.

From technology to regulations, we stay on top of trends transforming the surveying and civil engineering industry. Regularly check our Industry Insights for the latest news and trends shaping civil engineering.
