Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) $2.5 Billion Bond Election for Flood Risk Reduction

The Harris County Commissioners Court has proposed a $2.5 billion bond election to take place on August 25, 2018, the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey. Registered voters will be asked to vote on the bonds, which would provide local funding for flood risk reduction projects throughout Harris County. Early voting would begin on August 8, 2018.

The Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) currently has more than 150 proposed projects listed as candidates for the program, including voluntary home buyouts, storm repairs, subdivision drainage improvements, partnership projects, local projects, and community input projects.

“A watershed is a geographical region of land or “drainage area” that drains to a common channel or outlet, mostly creeks and bayous in Harris County. Drainage of the land can occur directly into a bayou or creek or through a series of systems that may include storm sewers, roadside ditches, and/or tributary channels.”

The HCFCD is requesting input from those who live in the watersheds. To determine which watershed you live in, use the HCFCD’s Interactive Map. Community Meetings are being held to help prepare an effective flood damage reduction program and to ensure residents have a chance to discuss projects that may affect their watershed.

Community Meetings listed as TBD will be updated on the HCFCD Website. If you are unable to attend a meeting, the HCFCD is taking direct calls at 713-684-4107.
