PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Luce Bayou Interbasin Transfer Project (LBITP) was initiated by Coastal Water Authority (CWA) in partnership with the City of Houston (COH) to help reduce groundwater dependency in the greater Houston area. The overall project involved a 24-mile canal system that transfers surface water from the Trinity River to Lake Houston to satisfy future drinking water demands and mandatory conversion requirements. The project serves nearly five million people across 640 square miles and has a maximum capacity of 775-CFS or 500 -.

SERVICE DETAILS

Our team was responsible for designing 4.5-miles of elevated earthen canal including 2-water level control gates and 6 hydraulic siphons. The water level control gates in our segment spanned 24-feet, making them one of the largest water level control gates ever designed and fabricated in the United States. The project included gate and siphon structures, drainage crossings, drainage ditches and culverts, erosion protection, all-weather maintenance road, and access driveways.

Our team designed the drainage system to minimize the impact on the local rice farmers and adjacent property owners. We met with several landowners to understand their drainage systems and ensure our design would not impact their farming operations. Our solution involved designing quad 96-inch siphons to allow for a cross drainage system and shallow spreader ditches that matched existing conditions.

The total construction cost for Segment 4 was $22.3 million.
