The Regional Mobility Authority of Brazos County Holds Inaugural Meeting

03.10.2020

DURATION 3 minute read

The Brazos County Regional Mobility Authority (RMA) held its inaugural meeting on January 30, 2020 after being created by the Texas Transportation Commission in May 2019. The five-person board will work to address a range of transportation issues in Brazos County.

Jones|Carter was instrumental in the creation of the RMA.  Acting through Douglas Bramwell, Senior Vice President and Survey Practice Leader and Rob Maxwell, Senior Vice President and Transportation Practice Leader, Jones|Carter supported the RMA creation by hosting and attending multiple meetings, delivering public presentations, answering questions from the community and leading discussions about establishing an RMA.

The Brazos County RMA is the 10th such entity in Texas. It will act as an independent local government agency that has the authority to finance, acquire, design, construct, operate and extend transportation projects. The RMA plans to collaborate with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the Metropolitan Planning Organization, Brazos County and area agencies to develop and implement projects which increase mobility and safety throughout the region.

The RMA’s initial project is the 1.2-mile section of SH 60, University Drive, adjacent to Texas A&M University. The proposed project would improve the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists and significantly improve the mobility from Wellborn Road to the east of College Avenue.  Concepts to date include creating a capped surface for cyclists, pedestrians and local deliveries with through traffic beneath in a depressed “tunnel.”

Additional projects the RMA plans to undertake include improvements to SH 21 and SH 47, I-14 section through the county, outer loop (proposed I-214) around Bryan and College Station, SH 6 additional main lanes, interchange and frontage road improvements, FM 2818 main lanes, SH 40 main lanes, and additional grade separations in the county.
