PROJECT OVERVIEW
Shepherd Drive and Durham Drive make up a two-mile corridor between IH-10 and IH-610 North in Houston, Texas. The corridor is redeveloping and is at the center of an active community where biking and walking are important. The Memorial Heights Redevelopment Authority (MHRA)/ TIRZ No. 5 has included the reconstruction of the corridor in their capital improvement plan, and they are on a mission to “push the envelope” on what a city maintained public roadway corridor can look like.
SERVICE DETAILS
Our team has completed planning services for the MHRA and is actively providing final design services for Phase 1 with Phase 2 to follow. The team will continue to serve MHRA through construction as the engineer of record, which is expected to be complete by 2024.
Construction will include “right-sizing” the roadway, improving the level of service at the signalized intersections, and decreasing the number of vehicular travel lanes from four lanes in each direction to three. Dedicated, back of curb bicycle lanes will be added to each street along with improved sidewalks. Safety remains a top priority. To ensure pedestrians and drivers are safe decreased conflict zones between modes of transportation were installed along with improved signage and striping, and lighting in the pedestrian zone.
Our team is also working with Houston METRO to consolidate and relocate bus stop locations to minimize impacts to mobility while improving the rider experience. We are reviewing landscape options, pedestrian and bicycle paving options, and low-impact development techniques to provide an inviting space for cars, buses, bicycles, and pedestrians.
